When Carl Cunningham arrived at Lake House Academy in early 2012, he brought the usual teacher's gear of books, personal items and mementos from his home, including pictures of his two kids and his wonderful wife. Carl also brought games, puzzles and other interesting gizmos he loves to use when teaching. Carl is a Math Teacher. His experiential style helps students "get" difficult concepts and his understanding of family connections helps him relate.

Carl's teaching experience includes work exclusively with "at-risk" students in a variety of educational settings, including Chicago Public Schools, the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. This experience has sharpened Carl's ability to connect with those who have learning differences, those, whose academics are compromised because of trauma and addictions in their families, those who have been marginalized at school and others who have lost their belief in their potential.

Carl received his bachelor's degree (summa cum laude/Phi Beta Kappa) in the Teaching of English from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is now pursuing a master's degree in Instructional Technology from North Carolina State University. Originally licensed to teach high school English, he has since added endorsements in middle school mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies. His versatility adds "bench strength" to our faculty while also allowing Carl to apply mathematic concepts more seamlessly to the real world.

Carl's time with his family (Rachel, Virginia, and Calvin), reading, gardening, fishing, and motorcycling keep his purpose defined, his batteries charged and his table well-provisioned! We hope you get a chance to meet him…even if algebra still scares you!

Gayle Oslund, RN has also joined the team at Lake House Academy.

One of the first things we parents worry about, when their daughter leaves home, is her health. Is she well taken care of? What will happen if she gets a cold, or needs support with a "personal" problem such as those that middle school girls encounter?

After an active search, we found a great solution. We hired a woman who reminds the girls of a warm mother who goes to the beach with her kids, reads, does arts and crafts and centers her life on service (she recently gave a full year of missionary work for her church in Honduras where she facilitated community teaching, assessments and follow up care).

This very same woman also happens to be a Registered Nurse with over twenty-five years of professional work in pediatrics, neurology, orthopedics and even geriatrics who has the diagnostic instincts and care skills of a pro with the versatility of a veteran health care professional. From home health, clinics and hospitals, Gayle understands what level of care our students need and when to engage the family and the medical community in support of our students' health.

Thank goodness we found all these talents and all this experience in one, great woman!

Please join the Lake House staff in welcoming both Carl and Gayle to the LHA Team.

Lake House Academy is a year round therapeutic boarding school for young girls ages 10 - 14. LHA provides an environment that allows for young girls to reconnect with their families, establish and maintain academic success, and gain the skills needed to identify themselves in order to thrive as young healthy girls.
