Kiatou @ Cushing’s

Kiatou is a six-week wilderness program for teens, aged 14-18, who are on a downward spiral. This Canadian-based program combines zoo- therapy with wilderness therapy to give youth an opportunity to ‘live an unforgettable adventure, take time to reflect on themselves and to enhance their personal development.’ “ Kiatou@Cushing’s is a small center situated on a privately owned 500 acre wilderness estate, a1.5 hour’s drive north of Ottawa’s international airport. In addition to three fulltime staff, they also have 17 Siberian Huskies, 4 horses and 12 birds of prey.

Students who are appropriate for Kiatou may be at-risk for becoming young offenders and may be experiencing alcohol and/or other drug use, low self-esteem, emotional disturbance, anger, defiance, anxiety, underachievement and/or rebellion.

The benefits of Kiatou include an improved physical and mental state, enhanced decision making and problem solving skills, a better attitude toward parents, family and life, new friends, being more pleasant and respectful, an increased self-confidence by completion of challenges, achievement of objectives by compliance with rules, renewed interest in academics, and increased physical vigor by ‘living in a drug-free environment that encourages positive lifestyle choices.’

No visa’s or passports are required, only 2 pieces of ID with photos, and most taxes are refundable to U.S. citizens, who also receive a high U.S. exchange rage against the Canadian dollar.
