Journeys Home

Journeys Home was developed in 1998 by William M. Campbell, a licensed psychotherapist. His vision was to create an outdoor adventure vacation that is also a journey of self-discovery for families or couples. “While deep-sea fishing, river rafting, horseback trekking, hiking or sailing,” participants also “take a rewarding trip into understanding themselves and others. Relationship-enhancement, communication skills development and trust-building activities are guided by a licensed psychotherapist who provides a safe, non-confrontational atmosphere for sharing.”

Trips usually last from 5 to 7 days and can be customized to occur either in the United States or anywhere else in the world. These trips can be planned for a couple, a family unit, or an individual, allowing the participants to step outside their daily routine in order to learn both about their own nature as well as the natural world around them.

Campbell feels the concept is simple, but the impact can be profound. “We need to understand ourselves and others better in order to have strong, healthy relationships. That means we need to learn to listen without being defensive and speak without giving offense. But often people need a facilitator to help them learn to do this. And, once they have learned, they can use their new communication skills over and over again.”

Campbell’s Journeys Home is his answer to his clients common question, “Where were you 10 years ago?” Among other things, “It’s designed to teach parents and children communication and relationship skills that will help them forge bonds to get the family through the adolescent experience strong and whole. These same skills help build supportive, caring relationships for couples.” “With the variety of situations and activities involved in each Journeys Home vacation, everyone gets a chance to try new roles and to really shine. This can be a particularly valuable experience for children.”
