Journeymen is a month long program beginning July 1, 2011, for young men ages 16 and up. The program combines a wilderness experience with an apprenticeship in the craft of timber framing (timber framing is a traditional form of house building that was common before the widespread use of metal in construction).
Journeymen is an early intervention for young men that present soft to moderate emotional and behavioral challenges. It also would be appropriate for a student successfully completing a longer-term program.
The wilderness portion of the program will take place in the Cabinet Mountains located in the northwest corner of Montana. The Cabinet Mountains are known for their majestic granite peaks and beautiful alpine lakes.
Jim Glaeser and Thomas Jenkins are the co-founders of Journeyman. Jim has 15 years of experience working with adolescents in a wilderness setting. After starting as a wilderness instructor with SUWS in Idaho, Jim moved on to serve as Executive Director of SUWS of the Carolinas, and helped to open three other wilderness programs. Thomas was a Waldorf teacher for 17 years before co-founding the girls transition program, Tis a Good Life with his wife Stacy Jenkins.
