John Dewey Academy would like to share some exciting news. The school has hired a highly qualified consulting psychiatrist to support our students. Dr. Kathleen D. Friend brings over 25 years of experience with patients of all ages, and specializes in non-pharmacologic treatments, academically gifted students, and helping adolescents wean off or significantly reduce the dosages and number of medications.

Dr. Friend did her Residency and Fellowship training at Cornell University Medical School in New York and has worked in outpatient, hospital, community mental health, and nursing home settings and has experience in a wide array of non-pharmacologic approaches including nutrition, functional medicine, Neurofeedback, meditation, trauma sensitive therapy, energy medicine, nurtured heart approach and heart-rhythm meditation. She is an advanced trainer for The Nurtured Heart Approach and mentor and teacher for the Institute for Applied Meditation in Tucson.

Prior to moving to the southwest, she was founder and sole proprietor of Integrative Psychiatry of the Berkshires in Lenox, Massachusetts, and was consulting psychiatrist to several residential schools in the Berkshires including the Kolb School and Berkshire Meadows.

Currently Dr. Friend is working as a child-psychiatrist in Tucson, Arizona and will provide tele-psychiatry for Dewey students, as well as face-to-face sessions and training when she is in Massachusetts. Her main mission is to bring out the greatness in all children and adults caring for them.

At John Dewey Academy is a 30 bed, co-ed therapeutic boarding school located in the historic town of Great Barrington, MA. It has an unrivaled academic program with PhD level instruction, 100% college placement, and PhD level therapists. Length of stay is a minimum of 15 month and college process and placement is the outcome goal for all students. Psychiatric support is available. Tours are offered weekly.
