The International Wilderness Leadership School (IWLS) Expedition Therapy experience has a unique hands-on approach to therapy, leadership, and expedition education. IWLS Expedition Therapy is a highly structured, supportive, and therapeutically sophisticated experience that includes individualized, group, and family therapy combined with backcountry technical skills and leadership initiatives. Clinicians work one-on-one with students to develop a therapeutic expedition plan which targets each of their presenting challenges.
IWLS is a division of Alaska Mountain Guides and Climbing School, Inc. IWLS has over 20 years of international guiding, outdoor leadership experience and technical instruction experience. Each year, IWLS, and its partner companies take over 60,000 individuals on a wide variety of trips and courses based in mountains, deserts, oceans, and rivers on most continents around the world. The majority IWLS Expedition Therapy Team have experience as wilderness therapy instructors and are certified Wilderness EMT, Wilderness First Responder, and have Rock Climbing, Canyoneering and Mountaineering Professional Guide Training.
IWLS Expedition Therapy Instructors and Staff Mentors provide students with support on eight consecutive, unique, and exciting weeklong expeditions in the heart of the desert southwest. Activities include mountaineering, canyoneering, rock climbing, backpacking, cultural exploration, and service within the community. Each expedition week creates countless opportunities to self reflect and expand one's personal vision about what is possible now while recreating a positive identity to effectively cope with what comes next. IWLS Expedition Therapy groups are co-ed and structured to include organizational and time management skills, individual & group goal setting, and expedition planning. Each student will have an opportunity to lead his or her own expedition, and process the experience with fellow peers. Proactive communication, sharing emotions, self-reflection and group dynamics are powerful components of IWLS Expedition Therapy. We are equipped to address individuals who struggle with depression, adoption, anger, communication difficulties, gender identity, NLD, ineffective coping mechanisms, isolation, substance abuse, low motivation, computer gaming, social anxiety, and an inability to move forward in life.
The IWLS Expedition Therapy experience is life changing and is designed for individuals who have a desire to grow far beyond what they believe they can accomplish. Students grasp a firm foundation of confidence and self-efficacy as they develop their own leadership style. The IWLS Expedition Therapy curriculum is designed to improve communication, increase self-esteem, empower, and internally motivate each individual.
IWLS Expedition Therapy emphasizes the Family System and considerable time is dedicated to bringing families into a place of balance and well-being. Our Expedition team gently guides and supports each family along the way so that they, too, can become empowered to create the kind of relationship that they want to reestablish with loved ones. The IWLS Expedition Therapy team is committed to facilitating the reestablishment of trust while creating an environment conducive to instilling a newfound sense of honesty and personal integrity. Currently, IWLS Expedition Therapy is open to individuals 18 years old and older. We offer rolling admissions.
International Wilderness Leadership School prepares students to become internally motivated to succeed both as individuals and as intuitive leaders. The Expedition Therapy curriculum emphasizes learning and mastering skill sets such as self-awareness, time management, group dynamics, sober living skills, while also gaining an ability to dial in and practice organizational skills. We promote self-discovery through goal-orientated, solution-based approaches to personal challenges. IWLS Expedition Therapy starts now! For more information, visit www.expeditiontherapy.com.
