The students and staff from Innercept were quite busy this past summer, exploring the beautiful northwest, taking in the sites and exploring the region they live in, all with the benefit of earning academic credits. Some of the highlights include:
Gold Mine Tour-
Nestled in the remote gold and silver mining region of northern Idaho, the Kellogg gold mine tour is a historical treasure-trove of what life was like in the 1800's west coast gold rush. Including panning for gold, exploring old mining facilities, and educational history lessons. Our students got an inside look of the everyday life, and the hard work of the 1800's miner seeking to strike it rich in the Wild West. This outing accounted for 1.5 credit hours in history for our Innercept Academy students.
Huckleberry Picking, the northwest's favorite berry-
The hills surrounding the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho area are bursting with them; growing only at a certain altitude. In most cases a formidable hike is required to get to these purple gems. Learning about the northwest ecosystem, the wildlife, and foresting industry were atop the educational list for this outing. In addition to the berries and the ecology lesson, the Innercept Academy Students gained 2 credit hours towards an Earth Science Credit.
Bird Aviation Museum and Invention Tour -
The tour of the Dr. Bird Aviation and Invention Museum explores not only the world of aviation, but virtually every type of invention to spark the scientific interest of the students. Counting toward 1.5 credit hours of Innercept Academy student's science credit, the museum trip was greatly enjoyed by students and teaching staff alike.
Watercolor Painting -
Two beautiful summer days full of learning painting skills and practicing those skills. Steve Shortridge, a local artist, spent an entire day teaching an engaging class of painting techniques. The students then had the opportunity to transfer these techniques to canvas and watercolor paper. This explorative painting session earned 3 total credit hours towards our student's elective credits.
Clay Mug Painting -
A creative and enjoyable way for our students to earn 1.5 elective credit hours, a local artist joined the classroom to make creative clay mugs that would later be glazed and fired in a kiln for students to keep and use. The project was fun, functional and informative!
Cataldo Mission Trip -
The oldest standing building in Idaho, the Cataldo mission is rich in history, art, and culture. The Mission was constructed in 1850 by Catholic missionaries and members of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Sacred Heart Mission and the Coeur d'Alene Old Mission State Park provide an educational experience not found anywhere else, giving students an opportunity to examine the dynamics and complexities between Jesuit missionaries and the tribal people among whom they settled. This immersive trip earned 1.5 hours of humanities credits for our students.
Painter's Chair Art Gallery -
Containing original and limited edition paintings, sculptures, and glassworks by over thirty highly sought after and nationally renowned contemporary artists, this field trip was a great chance for our students to compare various artistic styles. This trip earned our students 1.5 credit hours for their elective credit.
Exploring Local Government Trips -
A series of trips learning about the operation of local government, the Innercept Academy students had the chance to meet with the mayor of Coeur d'Alene, ID, the mayor of Post Falls, ID, the captain of the Coeur d'Alene Police Department, and tour the Rathdrum Aquifer water treatment plant. This series of educational trips counted for over 5 credit hours for government and humanities.
