In-Sight Discovery-Cushing Nature Retreat
In-Sight Discovery is a 42-day program offered through the facilities and resources of Cushing Nature Retreat, a “unique wilderness estate that pioneers ecology-recreation education.” They work with boys ages 16 and 17 who are struggling with alcohol/drug addiction, low self-esteem, anger, underachievement, and/or a lack of desire to establish short and medium term goals.
The program consists of numerous sessions involving animal husbandry, which provide “rare and unique opportunities to learn about, care for and work with birds of prey, horses and sled dogs.” On-site workshops include Nature interpretation, hiking, canoeing, local aboriginal history, cross- country skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding and horse-drawn sleigh and wagonette driving, as well as canoe tripping in western Quebec and sea kayaking on Georgian Bay. It is limited to 6 teens, and is open to only those wanting to participate.
Ultimately, In-Sight Discovery’s goal is to improve the teens’ ability to communicate and develop value-based goal setting skills. They work with teens to help them gain a greater sense of purpose, direction, and respect for their own lives that will remain with them as they return home.
