Idaho Youth Ranch Anchor House was established in 1983 by Dan English and a local Board of Directors in the Coeur d’ Alene, ID area. This a residential treatment facility is housed in a large home that is equipped to hold up to 16 at-risk boys between 13 and 18 years of age. Boys who are accepted into the home must meet state custody criteria, be in good physical health, and have one or more of the following characteristics: they may have been sexually and/or physically abused, have learning disabilities such as attention difficulties or difficulty with impulse control, have failed in a less restrictive setting, have substance abuse issues, be in a family with serious dysfunctional behavior, have a history of psychiatric treatment, and/or been expelled from school. The treatment components used to address these issues include anger management, cognitive self-change classes, problem solving, goal setting, independent living skills, vocational skills, and moral development.

Youth specialists, special education teachers, and social workers comprise the 20 member staff at the Idaho Youth Anchor House. A consulting psychiatrist and psychologist also are on hand to provide support to both staff and residents.

At The Anchor House, troubled children and families are provided with “a bridge to a valued, responsible and productive future” by using “strength based” programs and “balanced approach” practices.
