David Stupay, President & CEO

Heartspring announced today that the Board of Trustees named David Stupay as the next President and Chief Executive Officer effective April 13. Stupay has more than ten years of leadership experience in the nonprofit industry and special needs sector, specializing in the areas of finance, fundraising, strategic planning, change management and staff development.

Most recently, Stupay served as the CEO of Opportunity Enterprises, where he led all aspects of the $19.9 million company with 525 staff, focusing on providing resources to more than 1,100 children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. His accomplishments include generating $3.9 million in new revenue through program expansion and increasing fundraising dollars by more than 80 percent.

“David has an incredible passion for individuals with special needs; his experience and vision for an even more impactful organization undoubtedly aligns with the mentality that has guided Heartspring toward success for more than 80 years,” Heartspring Chairperson, Laurie Labarca, said.

His credentials also include three years as the Director of Finance and Operations at Esperanza Community Services before being appointed to Executive Director, where he aimed to position Esperanza as a leader in providing services to children and adults with developmental disabilities in the Chicago area.

He succeeds Gary Singleton who joined Heartspring as President and CEO in 2002 and has led efforts to increase growth and revenue across all programs. Singleton notably spearheaded initiatives resulting in a 35 percent growth in Heartspring’s therapeutic residential school, expanding capacity and quality of programming, while also developing a revolutionizing data collection system. Through his guidance, Heartspring Pediatric Services’ has shown consistent double-digit growth in the last several years, tripling net revenue from approximately $500,000 in 2002 to a projected $1.8 million in 2015. Singleton’s push for international partnerships also created a foundation for training and support in areas where services for individuals with special needs were virtually nonexistent.

“After 13 years at Heartspring, one thing is clear—we owe much of our success to the devotion of our staff. Through this time of change, I know that Heartspring will continue to be at the forefront of services and advocacy for children with special needs here at home, across the country and around the world,” Singleton said. “I am honored to have had the opportunity to work with such a talented and compassionate group of professionals and staff, and I am very optimistic about the path ahead. I am confident that David’s experience and shared commitment for children with special needs will continue Heartspring’s achievements for years to come.”
