At Elevations RTC, we have designed programming specifically created to help struggling young people overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges. One aspect of our programming which has been helpful for students on a daily basis is our on-campus canine programming.

| Dogs on campus bring Joy to students. |
Staff members, with the approval of our executive staff, are allowed to bring their pet dogs to campus. While the dogs are at our program, many students love to interact with them. These interactions provide students with an opportunity to form positive connections and display affection in appropriate ways.
A large body of research has shown that the presence of an animal can significantly increase positive, pro-social behaviors and can lower blood pressure and other negative responses to psychological stress. A study recently published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine showed decreased blood pressure, lower heart rate, reduced muscle tension and overall reduced stress in response to regular contact with a friendly and familiar dog.
The study also demonstrated changes in blood chemistry indicating significantly reduced amounts of stress related hormones such as cortisol. It noted that the positive psychological effects of contact with animals often had a much more rapid effect (usually 5 to 25 minutes) than medications commonly used to reduce stress and anxiety.
At Elevations, we like to have fun on campus. Letting students interact and play with dogs on campus can really lift their mood, while providing healing benefits.
