The Kildonan School was founded in 1969 by Diana Hanbury King to serve the needs of dyslexic students of average to above average intelligence. Dyslexia is a term used to describe difficulty in reading, writing, spelling, and sometimes speech, for which there is no other apparent cause. The level of development of dyslexic students’ language skills is markedly below that of their intellectual development. Providing they receive the right kind of teaching at the right time, dyslexics have a good chance for success and happiness in adult life.

Dunnabeck at Kildonan is a six-week summer program established by Ms. King to meet the needs of normal, intelligent boys and girls who are failing or underachieving in their academic work because of specific difficulty in reading, writing, or spelling. Since 1955, Dunnabeck has provided the necessary kinds of teaching to hundreds of students who have returned from their summer of intensive work to find success in school, often for the first time. The camp’s outdoor setting, informal atmosphere, and varied recreational program enables students to work hard without feeling they are being deprived of a summer. Ms. King was the 1990 recipient of the Samuel T. Orton Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Orton Dyslexia Society.

Dunnabeck can accommodate 95 boys and girls, ranging in age from 8 to 18. Great care is taken to ensure that the younger campers receive sufficient attention. A number of activities are planned just for this group. They remain under the careful supervision of the counselor and the camp nurse. Older students follow a schedule that allows for longer periods of study and for more intensive and challenging forms of recreation such as backpacking, canoeing, windsurfing, rock-climbing, and waterskiing.
