Coronado Academy is a new academic and personal-growth program located on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. This year-round college preparatory study-abroad school, provides a powerful academic and personal growth experience to students seeking a successful transition from high school to college. They are now accepting applications for students ages 16-19 who need help making the transition from high school to college. The typical student is at- risk of not gaining college admission, or, after having gained admission, has not been able to successfully complete their college education.

A variety of Academic options exist for Coronado Academy students, depending upon their individual circumstances and credit needs. Some students will earn a Coronado Academy high school diploma, while others will elect to have their Coronado Academy credits applied toward a diploma from their home high school. Older students with significant credit deficits may elect to work toward their GED in order to move quickly into Coronado Academy’s lower- division college coursework. Coronado Academy also offers students a variety of college-prep and college level courses, an intensive language and culture immersion program and a community service and entrepreneurship program. Each student’s curriculum is highly individualized, created by the student and structured by an advising faculty member. Coronado students attend weekly groups facilitated by masters-level counselors, as well as regular thematic seminars to support students in their transition from dependence to autonomy. Students are also involved in a recreation program including water sports, structured outdoor adventures, fine arts, and culinary arts.

The island of Costa Rica also provides an ideal environment for experiential learning, such as biology, botany, oceanography, geology, language, culture and natural history, and high-quality, hands-on learning. Students stay at Coronado Academy approximately 13-15 months and gain tools and confidence to succeed in college.
