Ben Hancock, a Community/Service Worker at CooperRiis-NC joined Lon Woodbury on Dec. 31, 2014 to explain how the program has developed an ETSY store to help their residents. CooperRiis is a therapeutic community for young adults with mental challenges. Part of their therapeutic experiences is for some of them to process goat's milk to make soaps and lotions, learning some work ethic. This is addition to counseling, therapy and the program's structure to help them learn how to overcome or live with their mental challenges. All the residents have work to do, and some process the soaps and lotions for sale. In the past they have sold their products at the local stores. To expand their reach, they have taken an ancient craftsman art and joined it to modern technology by making their products available on etsy.com, an online market for arts and crafts. Ben was enthusiastic about the results in the first month, sales being significantly more than what they had been receiving through local outlets. Ben explained the money is used to help with scholarships.
