In the fall of 2009, CooperRiis will open an urban campus in Asheville, NC as a sister facility to its Mill Spring Healing Farm Community. It will provide access to the opportunities of a very special and vibrant city and to two community colleges, four private colleges, and two state universities.

As with our Healing Farm, this new campus will be home to a therapeutic community consisting of 24 residents supported by a broad array of services and staff. The staff-to-resident ratio is greater than 1 to 1. The new facility is located on Zillicoa Street, on three wooded acres in the quiet, historic Montford neighborhood near the University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA).

Entry can be direct or via transfer from the main CooperRiis campus in Mill Spring. Each campus will have the same admission criteria.

With two campuses, plus its follow-on Community Programs in Asheville, Mill Spring and Tryon, NC, CooperRiis will have a total capacity for over 80 full-time residents, not counting the numerous alumni, who have moved into their own housing but continue to receive extended support services from CooperRiis and its staff.

In essence, CooperRiis' new urban program will be a mirror image of the Mill Spring program with these variations:

  • An urban setting with a multi-site therapeutic program for the person who prefers to begin their recovery in the city rather than in the country.

  • A bridge to college-life for some residents as a component of their recovery plan.

  • A highly supportive next-step into urban living for the person who has chosen first to begin their recovery process at the CooperRiis rural campus.

  • A program with a daily structure of meaningful work and recreational activities, as well as educational and community service activities off-campus in Asheville.
