Choices Counseling and Skills Center offers high quality programs for mental health and personal growth across the life span. They believe these social and emotional skills offer many people what they need to function well and thrive in their lives, and others will find that learning and using such skills will prevent suffering that comes from painful experiences in life. Choices offers evidence-based treatment for children, preteens, adolescents, families, couples and adults, utilizing Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which effectively treats a wide variety of diagnoses and symptoms, as its focus is on treating emotion dysregulation and its associated behaviors. The focus is on offering skills and strategies in distress tolerance, mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotion regulation. Choices also believes the same skills and strategies offered in their clinical population can assist those seeking prevention. We offer community workshops, professional development workshops, and extended courses in applying the same skills towards particular life transitions: bullying, parenting, launching, etc.

Patricia (Patty) Gieselman, MFT is the founder and Director of Choices Counseling & Skills Center. She is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with extensive experience working with adults, adolescents and families in both community-based and residential settings, including fifteen years in foster care and almost ten years consulting with educational programs. Ms. Gieselman was recognized for outstanding community service in 1999 and was awarded the "Woman of Achievement" award by the YWCA for her commitment to children and families. Her team consists of several other trained DBT therapists, each with their own unique styles, excellences, and sense of humor. Choices considers itself a team of therapists and trainers providing assistance to a team of clients and community members.

The Center offers two tracts geared towards helping struggling teens and their families:

  • The DBT Center: We offer comprehensive outpatient programs for adolescents, preteens and adults utilizing Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). In addition, we offer counseling and mental health services for individuals, couples and families.
  • The Learning Center: With a focus on prevention, we offer classes and workshops for people at any age - child to senior citizen - to enhance social emotional learning and effectively manage transitions in life.

Choices has been providing services throughout Southern California for more than 20 years. The diverse experience includes clinical services, education and training, consultation and program implementation in both public and nonprofit organizations. They pride ourselves on being a resource in the community and have a long-standing commitment to "doing what works.
