Camp Timberwolf

“Camp Timberwolf is an experiential outdoor tepee camping program specifically designed for children ages six through eleven with ADD, ADHD, LD, and other similar challenges.” The camp’s goal is to help teach traits such as “self-discipline, self-confidence, respect, honesty, fairness, and kindness. Taking responsibility for oneself is emphasized along with caring for others.”

The camp is located on 180 acres in the valley of Flat Rock, North Carolina. They have access to a thirty acre lake, an Olympic size pool, animal barns, fields and woods. Looking through their brochure, it seems having fun is a major part of what they do in their two-week sessions, which of course is very good for that age population.

Each session is limited to 23 campers, and the camper:staff ratio is 2:1.

An interesting segment of their brochure is the challenge in a question: “Did you know that most ADD/ADHD and other similarly challenged children: Are quick and imaginative thinkers? Can exhibit highly creative, even brilliant ideas? Can think outside of ordinary parameters? Often exhibit extraordinary problem- solving abilities? Are multi-task oriented and can shift from one subject to another with ease? Are often inventors, artists and visionaries?”

Clinical Camp Director Tony Coburn, Ph.D., CCSW, is the director of Hendersonville Counseling Services, and has been in private practice for twenty years. He is a family therapist who specializes in ADD, ADHD, and LD. He is a member of the National Professional Consortium on ADD. The nature programs were created by Hal Mahan, who holds a Ph.D. in Zoology and has been the Executive Director Of the San Diego Natural History Museum and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
