Camp Huntington, a co-ed, residential program for children and young adults with special learning and developmental needs, was recently featured on Doctor Radio's "About our Kids" show on SIRIUS satellite radio channel 114 and XM channel 119.
The weekly "About our Kids" program gives listeners information and advice about child, teen and family mental health issues from the New York University Child Study Center. Airing every Friday morning from 8-10 am (EST), hosts Dr. Jess Shatkin, Dr. Alexandra Barzvi and Dr. Lori Evans tackle tough topics and discuss what parents need to know to raise healthy and happy kids. Topics range from psychiatric and learning disorders, such as autism, dyslexia and depression, to encouraging healthy behaviors, self-esteem and school success.
The March 20, 2009 show featured Camp Huntington's Daniel Falk, Executive Director, Dr. Bruria Bodek-Falik, Executive Director Emeritus, and Cathy Crowley, Program Consultant. The three discussed the Camp Huntington residential program in detail, including its purpose for providing therapeutic recreation for children with neurological disorders, with a focus on social and independence skills growth.
"The program's residential program design allows for a structured day of activities that address social and learning levels, focusing on progress-making," said Daniel Falk, summarizing their comments during the interview. "We combine a behavioral approach through a psychological assessment, an academic approach through an IEP review, and a therapeutic approach through a great day of fun and play therapy."
Falk added: "Safety on campus is of the highest importance, including physical and social protection. We take great measures to ensure each child has a fun - and safe - experience at Camp Huntington."
Located in High Falls, New York, Camp Huntington residential program serves youth and young adults diagnosed with autism, mental retardation and other developmental or learning disorders, with camp sessions ranging from one to seven weeks. The campers are grouped by age and ability, not by diagnosis, and spend time swimming, playing music, cooking, singing and acting. Camp administrators believe all of their special campers possess "hidden abilities," not disabilities.
