Boulder Creek Academy welcomed Dr. Foster Cline, Co-Founder of the Love & Logic Institute, as keynote speaker for the school's Spring Parent Conference & Visit Weekend. This was part two of Dr. Cline's recent partnership with Boulder Creek, providing both staff and families with a common language for communicating with adolescents. Dr Cline's presentation, "Parenting With Love & Logic" examined ways of working with children in a manner that reduces conflict and rebellion.
First, Dr. Cline examined a variety of parenting styles. He then discussed parenting techniques based on the essentials of Love & Logic, which encourage opportunities for thinking and decision-making. They include creating "win-win" scenarios with high expectations, approaching problem solving with empathy, providing choices with rewards and consequences, and focusing on parents taking care of their own needs. He encouraged parent participation in question/answer formats, role-playing, and sharing of personal anecdotes to illustrate the lessons.
Afterward, everyone enjoyed a musical performance from the Sandpoint Conservatory.
The weekend continued with parent-teacher conferences on Boulder Creek's campus. Parents engaged in an active learning format by participating in academic lessons with classroom teachers. They also had an opportunity to watch their children's final presentations, as their visit coincided with the end of the grading term. Students enjoyed both on and off-campus visits with their families prior to their Alternative Curriculum Week. Boulder Creek also offered a family ski trip to Schweitzer.
