Boulder Creek Academy announces Business Development and Academic Department Enhancements.
BCA Social Sciences Educator and Special Education Coordinator Claude Bisson has now taken the position of Director of Business Development at BCA. Claude has been in his new role for the past few months and has transitioned very well.
Mr. Bisson has taught in the Academic Department at Boulder Creek Academy for 7 years. He holds a Masters in Education, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from Keene State College in New Hampshire, and was recently honored as Idaho's 2009 Human Rights Educator of the Year. Mr. Bisson's 26 years of experience in direct teaching and educational administration with families and advocates of young people with challenging emotional, behavioral and educational needs will serve him well in his new position. Claude joins Shawnale Wilson, Director of Admissions, to augment BCA's Business Development & Admissions team.
Joy Jansen, PhD in Education & M.Ed. in Special Education accepts position as Academic Services Coordinator.
Dr. Jansen comes to Boulder Creek Academy with an extensive background in working with adolescents and adults with neuropsychological dysfunctions. As Academic Services Coordinator, Dr. Jansen will oversee and coordinate special education and transition services, manage and facilitate Idaho Standards Achievement Test and college entrance tests, and provide training and consultation for all members of Boulder Creek Academy.
Dr. Jansen obtained her PhD in Education with a cognate in neuropsychological deficiencies from the University of Idaho and holds an M.Ed. in Special Education with an emphasis in learning disabilities and transition from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Prior to Boulder Creek Academy, Dr. Jansen was the Director of Special Education for a charter school in Salt Lake City, Utah. In addition, Dr. Jansen was appointed as Charter School Representative for the Utah State Special Education Advisory Panel.
Dr. Jansen spent two years under the mentorship and guidance of Dr. Sam Goldstein, conducting neuropsychological assessments and providing counsel for individuals of all ages. Through this experience Dr. Jansen is able to provide guidance and assistance to both academic professionals and parents in understanding a child's academic and behavioral struggles, as well as create and implement realistic goals which best meet the need of the student.
In addition, Dr. Jansen has experience working on the postsecondary level. She worked as a learning specialist in the office of Disability Services at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and University of Idaho, and was an instructor at the University of Idaho where she taught classes focusing on special education issues to pre-service teachers.
Throughout her career, Dr. Jansen has spoken at local, state, and national conferences as well as co-authored a number of book chapters on topics including ADHD, learning disabilities, and Pervasive Developmental Disorders. Currently, Dr. Jansen is the managing editor for the Encyclopedia of Child Behavior and Development to be published in 2012.
Boulder Creek Academy is a coeducational therapeutic boarding school, situated on 180 acres at the base of the Cabinet Mountains in Northern Idaho. The 12 to 24 month program offers year-round admissions for young people with distinct learning, behavioral, and emotional challenges from 13 to 18 years of age, who may struggle in a traditional academic setting or face challenges from residential or acute settings. BCA offers individual and family therapy, specialized weekly process groups, parent/child adventure expeditions, parent education seminars, milieu therapy 7 days/week, on-site nursing, medication management, & psychiatric consultation. BCA also provides college prep and technical/vocational academic studies, dual-enrollment through NIC, personalized learning plans, individual tutorials and reading specialist support, adventure/travel education services, weekly community service and job shadowing opportunities.
