Blueprint Education, a nonprofit educational organization, is once again partnering with Feather River College (FRC) to provide college credits for students and instructors in wilderness programs.
"I am very excited about the ongoing partnership between Feather River College and Blueprint Education," says Darla S. DeRuiter, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies and Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Chair of the Division of Professional and Technical Studies for FRC.
"FRC, as an accredited college, can provide college credit for participants and instructors in many of the field-based programs that Blueprint facilitates. Students clearly benefit, as they can jump-start or continue their education. Program participants and instructors have an opportunity to earn college credit. This accentuates the benefits of higher education and the personal discipline that accompanies it," DeRuiter states.
Three courses are available to students, including a three-credit course on the principles of outdoor recreation; a single-credit course on intermediate backpacking; and a three-credit course on outdoor recreation leadership. To give students the greatest flexibility, each course will be open-entry/open-exit.
Currently, the FRC credit program is available only through another Blueprint Education partner, the ANASAZI Foundation. High school students or ANASAZI employees are eligible for enrollment. Blueprint and FRC hope to expand the course credit program to other wilderness programs throughout the country.
"It has been great working with Doug Covey and his team at Blueprint," DeRuiter states, adding, "FRC's chief instructional officer, Dr. Michael Bagley, has expressed great enthusiasm about the relationship and the potential for exposure for FRC and the Outdoor Recreation Leadership program. We are confident that our curriculum can benefit program participants and instructors, and continue to support this joint venture!"
