Founded in 1980 as an extension of the Adolescent and Family Health Center, Blackwater Outdoor Experiences is a 22-day Wilderness Therapy program for adolescents and adults aged 15 to 35. The program addresses medical detoxification needs as well as providing therapeutic psychological treatment for clients with substance abuse and drug addiction issues, ADHD/ADD, low self esteem, bi-polar disorder, depression, anxiety, poor social skills, or academic challenges.
Medical Director and Founder, George M. Bright, M.D., graduated from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and completed a Fellowship at Harvard University Medical School. He established an Adolescent Medicine Program at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. He is a designated expert on ADHD by the American Medical Association and teaches physicians throughout the country about ADHD.
Blackwater Outdoor Experiences operates a variety of 22-day Wilderness Therapy expeditions. The expeditions combine wilderness living skills and experiences with individual, group, and family therapy. Master's level therapists accompany the wilderness expedition groups to guide the therapeutic sessions. The therapeutic expeditions include courses in backpacking, rock-climbing, canoeing, and team-building activities. The organization also operates a 22-day Field Detox program to specifically target clients with substance/drug abuse problems. The detoxification process is overseen by the medical director and can be extended by 7 to 10 days to further facilitate recovery.
Family is strongly encouraged to be a part of the healing process and staff of the program work with family members of clients while the clients are out on expeditions. Post-expedition, Field Guides and Therapists as well as the program Director meet with the families individually to make future recommendations for treatment and healing.
