Situated on a 15,000 acre ranch in Northwest Colorado, the Ashley Valley Wilderness program is a coed, wilderness based drug rehab for young adults ages 18-25. This 84 day unique program utilizes an outdoor setting for detoxification with similar peers that are also struggling with alcohol and drug addiction, and teaches them skills that will help manage their addictions when they return home. In addition, Ashley Valley works with young adults who struggle with low self esteem and are unable to transition to young adulthood.
Clinical Director and co- owner of Ashley Valley Wilderness is Rob Caldwell, LCSW, who previously was the Executive Director of Duchesne County and Uintah County Children's Justice Centers. Marty Bingham is the Program Director and also a co-owner who has prior experience working at a wilderness treatment program and extensive outdoor skills experience. Staff at AVW is trained in CPR, wilderness first aid and offers 24 hour staff supervision; a "on staff" EMT and participants must pass a full medical physical before entering the program.
Students participate in daily group therapy and weekly individual therapy while working on goals set specifically for them through an individualized treatment plan, including daily opportunities to practice healthy competition and teamwork, conflict resolution and communication skills. Students learn to change negative behavior patterns, work on life skills development that supports their own personal code of honor, such as: integrity, patience, cooperation, perseverance, problem solving, accountability and responsibility.
Prior to graduation, each student creates a life plan that includes goals, plans to obtain these goals and transition goals to live an independent life as an adult in the "real world".
