The ADDICTION: Focus on Women Conference (AFOW), sponsored by MAHEC, began 25 years ago to offer health and human service providers an educational opportunity focused on the clinical and special needs of substance abusing women and their families. The conference offers information for ANY behavioral health provider (male or female) about women and addiction, the societal and familial impact of substance abuse, and training on evidence-based models.
Because trauma often co-occurs with substance use disorders for women, the ADDICTION: Focus on Women (AFOW) Conference will promote trauma informed approaches with the support of SAMHSA and the NC Division of MH/DD/SAS at the 2011 conference. Trauma informed treatment for addiction issues incorporates knowledge about violence against women and the impact of trauma thereby increasing treatment effectiveness.
The conference is designed for substance abuse, mental health, criminal justice, human services, healthcare, and other professionals interested in supporting women and families in recovery from co-occurring disorders. It is a one-day conference with a pre-conference option available. The conference will feature National Speakers Stephanie Covington, PhD and Lisa Najavits, PhD. Registration will be open until the end of March 2011. The conference will be held at the beautiful Kanuga Conference and Center in Hendersonville, NC. There are scholarship opportunities, conference updates and the first Ever-Family Recovery Event information online. To learn more about this conference please visit our website at
