Since 1999, Alldredge Academy has made a difference in the lives of thousands of adolescents and their families. During the past several months, our leadership team has met to assess our strengths and better define our mission. As most of you are aware, Alldredge offers three phases as part of our program (Wilderness Search and Rescue, The Village, and the Academic Phase).
After a thoughtful examination of the needs of our students and families, we have decided to no longer offer the Academic Phase of our program. To more appropriately define our program we are also changing the name to Alldredge Wilderness Journey. This change will not affect currently enrolled students as we will make this transition slowly. We found that 86% of our graduates enroll into a therapeutic school upon leaving Alldredge. We are sensitive to the financial commitment parents are making for long term placements and find that our students are very well prepared to transition to the next step in their lives after being with us for 60 days, graduating from the Village phase.
We recognize that the Academic phase has been very valuable for many of our students throughout the years, but believe we can have a greater impact by focusing all of our attention and resources toward the wilderness experience and family workshops. Students will still be able to earn up to 3.5 credits during their time with us.
Alldredge provides a unique, two phase wilderness experience. Our counselors are in the field four days a week with the students and our rates are still under $400 per day. Alldredge is already recognized as one of the top programs of our kind in the country and we will continue to excel as we exclusively focus on the following phases- (Psychological testing available as indicated)
- Search and Rescue- 30 day wilderness program providing individual and group therapy, first aid and CPR certification, Search and Rescue training, and outdoor experiential learning opportunities. Students face challenges, both physically and emotionally during this phase while establishing trusting relationships and engaging in the therapeutic process.
- The Village - 30 day wilderness experience in a community living setting. Students further develop relationships with students and staff through individual counseling, therapeutic exercises, and group counseling. Students engage in journal writing assignments and a curriculum that employs the use of metaphor, ceremony, and the identification of life purpose.
The two phase wilderness model provides students the opportunity to learn, reflect, and change. During the Search and Rescue phase students learn to forego their needs in the quest to help others through exercise like our search and rescue mission. Once in the Village, students are able to reflect on their experiences and better define their values and beliefs. We believe that you can force an adolescent to change, but you can't force their desires to change. During their time at the Village, students are exposed to therapeutic experiences that bypass literal learning, influencing change at a deeper level. Students develop and practice successful behaviors to carry throughout their lives.
Our family workshops, led by Mike Beswick, LCSW, are an integral part of our program. Mike is known for his empowering method of engaging groups to do the intensive work that is necessary to facilitate family healing and growth. The first family workshop occurs directly after the Search and Rescue phase. Parents and their teens begin to develop empathy and begin the process of healing. Following the Village experience, families and students will come together again to learn and process. This workshop is geared towards sustaining the momentum of growth and change established during their time at Alldredge.
We look forward to working with you and the families you support. Alldredge will continue to provide quality programming to the students and families with whom we work. Please do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions.
