Adirondack Leadership Expeditions, a character development wilderness program for struggling teens, has announced the appointment of Thomas Miller, LCSW, to Clinical Director.

"We are pleased to welcome Thomas to the ALE team," said Robert Theisen, Executive Director of the program. "Thomas possesses extensive experience working with adolescents, particularly within the context of the family structure and its response to traumatic or disruptive events. His expertise in the psychology of adolescence, trauma treatment modalities, family systems, gender/identity issues, plus solid drug and alcohol assessment skills make him a great asset to our management team."

Thomas' professional background includes working as an alcohol, tobacco and drug counselor in a combined middle school/high school in Westchester County, New York. He was in private practice in Westchester County where he provided individual, group and family therapy. In this setting, he became adept at connecting with and engaging even the hardest to reach adolescents. He also is the former Program Director of a therapeutic milieu for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth ages 13-21.

Thomas has extensive knowledge about the contemporary challenges faced by many teens today.

"I utilize a cognitive-behavioral approach," said Thomas. "This strengths-based perspective has helped the adolescents I work with find their own resilience to get themselves 'unstuck' and moving in the right direction."

Thomas is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. He earned his Bachelor Degree in Social Work from Long Island University, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and was the recipient of the Social Work Academic Achievement Award. He received his Master's Degree in Social Work from New York University, graduating Summa Cum Laude.
