[New Perspectives]

Logan River Academy is a new 80-bed, fully licensed residential treatment center, with a private accredited school. The Academy accepts troubled boys and girls aged 12 to 17, who are experiencing behavioral, emotional, and substance abuse problems. “The program emphasizes a productive blend of therapeutic environment, structured treatment, and strong academic program.”

The goal at Logan River Academy is to help each child develop the necessary skills to succeed at home, in school, and in the community. This is accomplished with a program staff who have been successfully treating children and adolescents for many years. This treatment team includes Clinical Director Craig Rodabough, LMFT, with fifteen years of clinical experience, mostly in residential treatment, and Robert Crist, M.D., a board eligible psychiatrist with over thirty years experience with adolescents, and considered to be a pioneer in Residential Treatment. They work with counselors and teachers to develop an individualized treatment plan for each student that is based on a comprehensive assessment and evaluation. The treatment plan that is formed utilizes individual, group, family, and experiential therapies, and if needed, a chemical recovery program based on the 12-step model. Students are admitted under a DSM IV diagnosis, on either a voluntary or involuntary basis. The average length of stay is 12 months.

Logan River Academy considers education to be a “critical element in every young person’s development.” Students attend class from 8:30 am until 3:30 Monday thru Friday. The curriculum, based on Utah State Office of Education requirements, is broad enough to afford each student a challenging and rewarding year- round educational experience with certified teachers. Each student’s personal education goals and needs help determine the courses needed to progress toward graduation. The curriculum includes both junior and senior high school classes, with certified teachers and small classes.

Located just a little over an hour north of Salt Lake City, Cache Valley is truly a beautiful setting. Logan is the largest of several small communities making up the valley. Recreational opportunities abound with ski resorts, mountains, lakes, rivers, wetlands, and wildlife. Logan River Academy utilizes these many resources for both recreational activities and experiential therapy.
