New Perspectives - Dec, 1999 Issue #64

 Olympus View Hospital
Salt Lake City, Utah
801-272-8000
Ken Cozzens, Director of Business Development

“Olympus View is a psychiatric and chemical dependency hospital that has been providing mental health services and substance abuse treatment for over 10 years. We offer both inpatient and outpatient care to adults and adolescents, which helps ensure that the needs of each individual are met.”

“We treat adolescents with problems that include: emotional disturbances; chemical dependency; survivors of abuse; medically fragile persons with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy or HIV; Learning Disabilities, and Attention Deficit.

“Our outpatient programs include intensive and partial day treatment plans. No-cost assessments are available 24 hours a day.”

“We also have a Residential Treatment Center specifically for adolescents who have previously completed an inpatient program and need further treatment in a structured, safe environment, or for those who continue to experience difficulties after extensive outpatient services or partial hospitalization. Many problems affect not only the adolescent, but the entire family; therefore, every effort is made in our program to promote family reunification. For these adolescents, we have a fully-accredited, in-house school taught by certified teachers. The credits issued by our in-house school are transferable. Students are placed in the appropriate school program based upon their treatment level.”

“At Olympus View, our goal is to help adults learn about and recover from the disease of addiction through a personalized treatment program. This treatment utilizes an intensive 12-step, behavior modification, self-help approach. Our treatment emphasis is on guiding the patient toward recognizing his/her own responsibility for and the consequences of the addiction, and understanding the steps necessary for recovery. Treatment is specially designed according to the individual’s needs by a complete multi-disciplinary team of professionals. The treatment play includes some or all of the following components: 12-Step Study Group, Process Group Therapy, Didactic Group Therapy, Creative/Recreational Group Therapy, and Task-Oriented Therapy.”

“Students in the residential treatment center attend school four hours a day and receive instruction in the four basic subjects. Additional Electives are pursued based on individual progress level. Our school is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges and follows the Utah State Office of Education basic curriculum guidelines. Parents may provide course work from the student’s home school which will then be incorporated into the educational plan.”

“Since the length of treatment for acute and partial programs is brief, students in these programs are tutored on their current home school work or they are given assignments to continue their education. School credits are not earned in these programs.”

The Olympus View Hospital is located on a 12-acre campus conveniently located in the Holladay area, with semi-private patient rooms, private consultation rooms and a ropes course. They are JCAHO accredited, licensed by the Utah Department of Health, and TRICARE (CHAMPUS) approved. They are staffed by Board Certified/Eligible Psychiatrists, Licensed Psychologists, Registered Nurses, Masters Level Therapists, Certified Teachers, Certified Addiction Counselors, and a Registered Dietician.
